Progress best places to work logoA survey by Progress Magazine names the information and communications technology company Ambir as the best place to work in Atlantic Canada.

"Apparently so," said chief executive officer Ian Cavanagh onThursday. "A surprise to me, but a very pleasant one."

Ambir, incorporated in Saint John in 2004, employs about 25 people in the city and in Fredericton. It also has an office in Halifax.

Progress Magazine engaged the Best Companies Group to survey East Coast workplaces. Cavanagh said the company had to fill out a long survey form with lots of questions, "but most of all you defer to your employees who filled in an anonymous survey and I really think this is the most meaningful part of the survey."

Progress Magazine cites Ambir's profit-sharing program, an average annual salary of $83,000, and extended health coverage as factors in the first place finish in the survey. "I think it's the culture, it's an environment where we treat everyone with respect," Cavanagh said. "We have a very mature team, we have people who have worked for a lot of employers," he said. "It's a sharing, caring, people-centric environment - we want to enjoy each other's company as we build the business."

Cavanagh said Ambir employees, who could all find work elsewhere, share a vision of building an enterprise in New Brunswick. "We are committed to staying here." He said the company created AmbirCares last year to undertake community and charitable projects. This year AmbirCares will sponsor a project to provide clean drinking water to a community in India.

The survey lists six other New Brunswick employers among the top 20 in the region: Farm Credit Canada in Moncton (2), Deloitte & Touche LLP in Saint John (3), Fundy Engineering & consulting Ltd. in Saint John (9), OMISTA Credit Union in Moncton (12), Fairmont Hotels & Resort Global Reservations Centre in Moncton (15) and Assumption Life in Moncton (17).
